Detour Ahead

This is the latest project I’ve recently completed. Recorded over four days in January of 2017, I arranged, produced, played on and mixed this project for the inimitable Southside Johnny. It was released on Leroy Records in December of 2017.

Glenn alexander & shadowland

shadowland

In 2016, I produced, recorded, mixed, wrote horn arrangements for and played on this release from guitarist Glenn Alexander. It’s a cool blending of soul, rock n roll, and country. Glenn’s got a unique thing going and the band is a ton of fun.

New York Horns

Celebrating our 20th anniversary in 2017! Begun as a horn section in 1997 by myself and my dear friend and trumpeter Chris Anderson, New York Horns has now evolved into a world class band, playing diverse and listenable music. In 2014 Chris and I wrote, arranged and produced this album.

Horns of Plenty

For several years, at christmastime i have produced tracks and donated the proceeds from sales to help fight hunger under the organization horns of plenty. in this age of obscene gilded wealth, no one should ever go hungry in this country. all of these tracks were produced and financed by me, with the generous donation of time and talents by many of my friends and colleagues. All money collected from sales goes to support city harvest in new york city and the Community food bank of New jersey. Please consider purchasing a track or making a direct donation to one of these great organizations. every dollar helps feed someone in need.

This Madness Has To Stop

Just shy of my 18th birthday, I got a mysterious phone call. “This is Hank Rush. I sing lead and run the Fantastic Showmen. We need a saxophone player and you were recommended to me. You interested in a gig?”

The Blue Note – June 4, 2018

So… where to begin?

Until last night, after almost 32 years as a musician in New York, I had never played the Blue Note. I’d been there many times to hear other artists. Never set foot on the stage myself.

Creating A Unique Identity on the EWI

This originally appeared on my EWI website, ewilogic.com, on September 12, 2012:

I think ultimately the question becomes: “What creates a musical identity on an instrument?” I’ve posted this question before on other wind forums and have gotten minimal…

30 Years… where has it gone?

30 years… My oh my. Where has it gone? On July 16, 1986, – 30 years ago today – the 19 year old version of me, from nowhere-special North Carolina stepped off a Piedmont Airlines jet, with a duffel bag…

Civility In An Age Of Disorder

I wrote this as a response to behavior in an FaceBook discussion group:

There’s been a lot of discussion lately of “pro” in this group, and what that means vis a vis the beginning and intermediate members (and pros I…

My Review of the Ridenour Bass Clarinet

In the fall of 2011, I was asked to play the low reed chair on the first national tour of the Tony Award winning Broadway show, Memphis. Since I didn’t own my own bass clarinet at the time, and had…

A Bit O' History

Originally from North Carolina, I’ve lived in New York City for the past 30+ years, becoming part of the tapestry of the city’s vibrant music scene. Originally relocating to NY to study, I was part of the very first graduating class of the New School’s Jazz & Contemporary Music program, where I received my bachelor’s degree, and I had the distinct pleasure of studying with renowned saxophonist Jimmy Heath and pianist Roland Hannah while pursuing my master’s degree at Queens College, part of the City University of New York.

My career has seen me perform with artists as varied as Diana Ross, Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes, The Allman Brothers, Little Feat, They Might Be Giants, Vaneese Thomas, Mary Wilson, Bernard Purdie, Matt “Guitar” Murphy, The Spinners, The O’Jays, The Four Tops, The Temptations, and a multitude of others. Equally at ease in the theater pit as on the performance stage, I’ve performed and/or toured with the Broadway musicals Smokey Joe's Cafe,  A Night With Janis Joplin, Memphis, Hair, Hairspray, In The Heights, Movin Out, Five Guys Named Moe, and The Rocky Horror Show.

I love the studio as a performer, producer, and engineer. As an Apple certified Logic Pro, I’m often called on to install, troubleshoot and teach studio installations of Apple’s flagship audio program. I’ve written, performed and produced music for television and film, from CBS Sports and NBC News to daytime talk shows like Sally Jesse Raphael, Maury Povich, and Oprah. My saxophone and woodwind playing has been featured on local and national TV & radio, and my horn section arranging and orchestration skills have been used on numerous recordings.

I have expended much energy, time and resources in exploring the potential of the Akai EWI (Electronic Wind Synth). I’ve devoted myself to developing the relationship between the EWI and Logic/Mainstage, while bringing the instrument to a wider audience. The very informative website, www.ewilogic.com, was developed and is maintained by me, to help further these goals.

In 1997, I co-founded New York Horns (aka the Juke Horns), a horn section specializing in the writing, recording, performance and promotion of horn section oriented music. You can find more about that at www.nyhorns.com Since 1997, NYH has been a fixture of the New York music scene, performing, recording and writing for artists of all types and styles. Our recent album, New York Horns, has garnered rave reviews by fans and press alike for its soul & blues infused American roots music.

I currently split my time between gigs for worldwide music icon Diana Ross and the legendary New Jersey soul/rock band, Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes, regularly touring throughout the US and Europe.

I teach at Sarah Lawrence College, in Bronxville, NY where I am the saxophone instructor, as well as directing ensembles and teaching jazz arranging. I’m very much enjoying working with the next generation of young musicians. They inspire me to continue to study and grow.

I am thrilled to be an artist with Cannonball Saxophones, Aaron Drake Mouthpieces, Silverstein Ligatures, AMT Microphones, D’Addario Reeds, and Dynasample performance synthesizers.
